2004 Yokohama-to-Honolulu Page... Following is what I'll call Lilinoe ship preparation page. For course planning page, click here. First of all, all I can say is what a ride and what a tough boat! Now, to try and make a long story short...the beginning. Early in 2003 I began planning to sail Lilinoe from Japan to Hawai'i. Reason for this is I knew my job in Japan would be coming to a close and there was a 99% chance my next job would be on mainland, U.S. My goal was to sail Lilinoe on to Hawai'i summer of 2004, and depending on where my next job would be, on to the west coast summer of 2005 then if needed, ship her overland to the east coast...a great plan spanning almost three years. So, based on that timeline, I began planning and preparing in earnest for the 2004 journey. Lilinoe has made many open-ocean trips...both long-haul distances (greater than three weeks per leg) and shorter. I had been all over her and was satisfied with her strength...my attention turned to other weaknesses; namely the topside teak work. This included primarily the toerails and bowsprit. The original bowsprit had been poked through the side of another boat by a previous owner so had some decent sized cracks. The toerails were rotted...bottom line was both had to be replaced. I've posted pictures of the teak work...click here and scroll down the work page to see that work... Other items I wanted to have done prior to the trip: Those are the big ticket items. |
